Mission
Fort Bend Recovers is a collaborative network that addresses the long-term needs of Fort Bend County following a disaster. As a network, Fort Bend Recovers strives to:
- Provide coordinated management of the long-term recovery process.
- Provide long-term recovery assistance to individuals and families affected by disasters who do not have adequate personal resources for their unique recovery plans.
- Provide advocacy for Fort Bend County’s most vulnerable residents, especially seniors, individuals with access and functional needs and lower income families.
Scope
Fort Bend Recovers is a collaborative network of private and public actors, established and maintained on behalf of the individuals, families, businesses, communities, and other stakeholders in Fort Bend County to facilitate and implement a coordinated response to disaster recovery.
Its goal is to engage the entire county—residents, cities, and private sector partners—before, during, and after an incident and its recovery process, increasing awareness and encouraging cooperation to facilitate a smoother and more proactive recovery.
Fort Bend Recovers will determine the long-term recovery efforts in Fort Bend County following each unique disaster and outline the Post Disaster Recovery Plan and plan of action for that specific disaster. Given the resources available, Fort Bend Recovers will prioritize which needs can be addressed.
United Way of Greater Houston serves as the backbone and facilitator of the group in partnership with the Fort Bend County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
History
Fort Bend Recovers was born from a powerful spirit of collaboration and community resilience following the unprecedented Brazos River flooding in May/June 2016. With more than 1,200 homes damaged and 50,000 residents affected, the need for long-term, coordinated recovery quickly became clear.
Initially mobilized by the United Way of Greater Houston and the Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management, Fort Bend Recovers formally came together as the county’s Long-Term Recovery Committee in 2016. What began as an immediate response effort, with faith-based organizations, nonprofits, and volunteers providing shelter, food, clean-up, and basic needs, grew into a structured network committed to rebuilding lives and strengthening communities for the long haul.
Since its formation, Fort Bend Recovers has united over 68 organizations and more than 150 members across the nonprofit, faith, and public sectors. Together, we’ve developed coordinated strategies for disaster case management, home repairs and rebuilds, unmet needs funding, donations warehousing, volunteer mobilization, and mental and spiritual health support.
Through these challenges, Fort Bend Recovers emerged not only as a crisis response engine, but as a trusted long-term recovery model, ensuring every resident has the opportunity to recover, rebuild, and thrive after a disaster.
